Rafael Nadal Dominates One-Sided Nick Kyrgios Clash

Lopez, ranked 38 in the world, beat Gilles Simon of France 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.

The pair served up a sizzling second set, especially in the seventh game when Nadal finally broke the Belgian for a second time in the set at the fourth attempt after sensational rallies which had spectators in the Caja Magica rising to their feet in appreciation. In fact, Djokovic's win in 2011 was his first and only win over Nadal on clay.

"It's true I've been through some hard days with the issue of my ear (infection), which cost me a little bit of general stability".

Djokovic was punching the air after racing in to swoop for an incredible cross-court backhand victor, prompting applause from his stunned opponent, and the pressure told on Lopez when he netted a forehand to bow out when serving to stay in the tournament. "My aim and the tournament's was to start on Tuesday but after this it's better to wait a day and start on Wednesday".

This was Djokovic's first match since parting company with long-term coach Marian Vajda on Friday, who had worked with the Serbian since 2006.

Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas recovered from losing the second set 6-0 to beat Benoit Paire and will meet Germany's Alexander Zverev, a 6-4 6-4 victor over Tomas Berdych.

"Maybe I was lucky the roof closed", Djokovic said. "I know that I have to play at my highest level, perhaps similar to today or even better". "Eventually the game will come together".

The early signs were positive for the 12-time Grand Slam champion as despite losing his service in the opening game, he broke straight back to start a six-game streak to romp through the first set.

The Spaniard had to save two break points to hold for 4-3 and then took his chance to break with Djokovic serving to stay in the set.

He was beaten by qualifier Denis Istomin in the second round of the Australian Open.

Fan favorite Nadal now has two wins in as many matches over world number 10 Goffin.

"One break was enough, 5-4, 6-5, both sets", Djokovic said in his post-match interview.

Djokovic could meet Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.

Fognini twice led by a break in the first set, and served for the set at 5-4, but he faltered at the line and went on to lose the set on a tie break.

Djokovic defeated Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 7-5, while Nadal eased past Nick Kyrgios of Australia 6-3, 6-1. Furthermore, Ferrer is a shell of his former self, and the former world number four recorded a confidence-boosting, 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Spaniard, advancing to his fifth consecutive quarterfinal in Madrid.

In the women's draw, Eugenie Bouchard of Canada advanced to the quarterfinals after top-seeded Angelique Kerber retired with a left thigh injury in the second set.

A finalist in Madrid in 2014, Nishikori lost his last 10 matches against Djokovic, including in the semifinals in Madrid past year. In 20 games this year the Serb scored 16 victories and conceded 4 times, for comparison in the last three seasons he suffered 8, 6 and 9 defeats, winning more than 60 times.

"I'm still practicing", he said.
