Pope Francis asks Melania what she feeds President Trump

"Potica?" Francis asked Melania, in a reference to a calorie-laden cake that comes from her native Slovenia and is pronounced "potteezza".

Trump described his visit with Pope Francis as "fantastic" and the "honor of a lifetime".

The pope said, "I give this to you so that you can be an instrument of peace".

Pope Francis issued the encyclical in 2015, just months before almost 200 countries signed the historic Paris Agreement on climate change. The documents concern topics such as family, the joy of the gospel, and the environment.

Trump presented the pope with several gifts, including a collection of first editions by Martin Luther King and a bronze sculpture. "I just got a call, as I'm walking up here", Trump said in a campaign stop in SC.

Trump could be heard saying it was "an honour" to be there during the meeting.

The president's delegation also included Ivanka's husband Jared Kishner, a top White house aide and National security adviser H.R. McMaster. Both leaders, who have contrasting views on several crucial issues discussed global affairs in a brief meeting which lasted 20 minutes.

Trump responded by calling Francis "disgraceful" for doubting his faith. "I think he does to every world leader".

"T$3 he pollution produced by companies which operate in less developed countries in ways they could never do at home, in those countries in which they raise their capital: We note that often the businesses that operate this way are multinationals.

I think you will enjoy them", Trump told the pope.

Twitter users were quick to upload pictures and react to the meeting comparing it to former President Barack Obama's meeting with the Pope.

Trump and Francis certainly had differences to iron out during their meeting.

"While Trump flashed a wide grin, the Pope offered only a modest smile-his demeanor, business like".

Many of those pilgrims, though, had a more hard than normal time getting into the square.

Accompanied by the archbishop up an elevator and down a frescoed hallway, the president passed more Swiss Guards in the Clementine Hall.

He later flew to Brussels where he was to meet Belgium's king and prime minister on Wednesday evening before a day of meetings with European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders on Thursday.

Reuters reported that he later told reporters about how meeting the pope went: "Great".

"Well, I'll be reading them", Mr Trump said. "Yes!" The first lady laughed in delight. In Saudi Arabia, however, the government did not request that Mrs. Trump wear a head covering known as a hijab, or a headscarf, Grisham said. Vatican officials shooed reporters out of the room and the two men met for half an hour. One, echoing the US bishops, praised the Trump administration's decision to extend by six months the Temporary Protected Status program for Haitian citizens in the United States. And it's left no real opportunities to push the president beyond his talking points on some of the trip's most complex issues, including the prospect of restarting Middle East peace talks and strengthening regional alliances to combat terrorism.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Francis was critical of Trump's plans to build a wall along the border with Mexico.

"He is something", Trump said.
