The test was North Korea's second in a week, and South Korea's new liberal government said it dashed its hopes for peace on the peninsula. Some of them believe that it could develop a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike the USA mainland by 2030 or later.

The spike in tensions comes with a new president in South Korea.

South Korean activists have often flown balloons carrying anti-Pyongyang propaganda messages and light goods like snacks in to North Korea, to the frustration of the South's authorities. The South Korean defense minister recently stated that the North's missile program is advancing at an accelerated rate, one much faster than previously expected. North Korea is threatening a sixth nuclear test.

The border incident came two days after Pyongyang fired a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan.

Sales to Chinese visitors were down 40% at Lotte Duty Free, a Lotte spokesman said previously, adding that they usually make up 70% of the company's overall sales.
