South Korea fires shots at North Korea after object crosses border

The diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting had not been officially announced.

KCNA said the North was ready to start mass-producing the new medium-range ballistic missile, which it said is capable of reaching Japan and major American military bases.

USA officials have been far less sanguine about the test of a long-range KN-17, or Hwasong-12, missile just over a week ago, which U.S. officials believe survived re-entry to some degree.

In Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the launch a "challenge to the world" that tramples global efforts to resolve the North Korean nuclear and missile problems peacefully. She said the missile did not go higher than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles), according to preliminary data. The medium range missiles could be capable of reaching Japan and the USA military bases there.Experts have indicated that five of these photos, that appeared on page 3 of the daily, seem to have been taken when the missile was re-entering the lower atmosphere."If you are a country that is supplying or supporting North Korea, we will call you out on it", Haley said.

Tensions are high in the region over the nuclear-armed North's weapons ambitions, and the incident comes only two days after its latest missile launch.

Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the South Korean forces are bolstering its air defence posture owing to the latest launch while keeping a close watch on the situation.

North Korea has significantly speeded up its missile tests over the past year or so and appears to be making tangible progress toward developing an arsenal that poses a threat not only to South Korea and Japan - which together host about 80,000 US troops - but also toward an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the mainland United States. It said data was recorded by a device mounted on the warhead.

In early 2017, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un warned the country was in the advanced stages of developing an intercontinental missile that would be able to reach the US.

KCNA said last week's missile test put Hawaii and Alaska within range.

KCNA said Kim was able to view the Earth from a camera mounted on the missile.

Sunday's missile test was tracked by US Pacific Command.

He told reporters on Monday that France hopes the council will move ahead on a strong resolution that demands better implementation of existing sanctions and tougher new sanctions against North Korea. North Korea fired a. Pyongyang has fired eight missiles so far this year despite worldwide condemnation.

So far nearly all the North's missiles have been liquid-fuelled, which have to be time-consumingly filled with propellant before launch.

He noted the Pukguksong-2's solid fuel is of particular concern.

North Korea seeks a dialogue with the Trump administration, along with obtaining US recognition as a nuclear state, which is unlikely to happen. Seoul's military said the North Korean projectile crossed the border with South Korea.

It stressed the importance of North Korea "immediately showing honest commitment to denuclearisation through concrete action".

It is still unclear whether the unspecified object was a ballistic missile.

North Korea's media, meanwhile, have stepped up their calls for even more missile launches because of what Pyongyang claims is an increasingly hostile policy by President Donald Trump.
