If the demise of the defending Stanley Cup champions has been greatly exaggerated, the Ottawa Senators have themselves to blame.
The victory evens the series 2-2, as the reigning champs keep willing their way to wins in a postseason run when they seem to lose a player each game to injury. "It's just not going to happen", Clarke MacArthur said.
Instead, the Senators poked a sleeping giant in Pittsburgh's two-headed monster.
The Penguins can not afford another game like the one they played Wednesday night. They have life now.
LONDON - The head of the Pyeongchang Olympics organizing committee said Thursday that the NHL isn't being "greedy" preventing hockey stars going to the 2018 Games and he was willing to be flexible to meet their demands. But it doesn't just stop with Sid.
With Matt Murray healthy and Marc-Andre Fleury coming off his worst game of the playoffs, Mike Sullivan has a tough decision to makefor the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Ducks previously had allowed three shots in a period in the postseason six different times, the last in the first period of Game 5 of the Western finals May 25, 2015, against Chicago.
"These guys have been here before", Sullivan said Saturday morning. "It's not easy. All I can really do is kind of jump in and try not to think about it. We have some dynamic forwards that a lot of times capture the storylines, but these guys are playing behind them and they quietly do a real good job for us".
Ottawa could only go so long without paying for its lack of production with the man advantage. So as I said, these decisions are very hard. "We just weren't connecting". "This is the choice that we made for Game 4".
Game 4 was an opportunity missed nonetheless.
Game 5 goes Sunday in Pittsburgh. Theyre terrific goalies, and were fortunate that we have these guys as part of our team.. This included a 16 game winning streak, the second longest in league history, during which they beat the Penguins 7-1. "That's how it is".
In other words, the challenge in a series that's now down to a best-of-three remains great. Hoffman got it going by capitalizing on Turris' shot that bounced awkwardly wide of the goal. He had a game-high five shots on goal, after managing a total of 12 shots on goal in his previous eight games. The Senators' faithful weren't happy with their club's effort and they had right to be upset - this wasn't what anybody expected with so much on the line. He became the teams de facto No. 1 goalie throughout the course of the season but tweaked a lower-body injury during warmups before Game 1 of Pittsburghs first-round series against Columbus.
But this isn't just any circumstance.
In the Eastern Conference, things would go differently.
The safest defence was "stick on puck" and ensuring that "when he's twisting that you don't get lost on everything".
If you're counting at home, that's Kris Letang, Justin Schultz, now Ruhwedel gone - and Trevor Daley is obviously not 100 per cent. They had fallen behind in the series and had only three goals through its first three games.
At some point, you would have to think those losses amount to something significant. As was Joshua Crockett, a Penguins writer for THW who was passionate about the topic on Twitter. Follow us on Twitter (@FacingOff_THW) and get in on the debate there too.
The Senators came out charging in the third period, hoping to make up the two-goal disadvantage and at least force overtime, something they have excelled at this spring.
