Akot starred at Wasatch Academy (Mount Pleasant, Utah) last season, averaging 16 points and six boards per game.
The guard, who went to NBA Draft Combine, made the announcement on Twitter.
Players without an agent have until May 24 to decide whether to remain in the draft or withdraw and return to school.
Alkins also said at the Combine he was "50-50" on returning to school or staying in the draft, saying it would depend on the feedback he receives from National Basketball Association scouts and executives. "It's a tough decision".
Alkins' return gives UA a potentially powerful starting lineup with he and Allonzo Trier on the wings, surrounded by Parker Jackson-Cartwright at point guard, Ayton at power forward and Dusan Ristic at center.
Arizona is now atop CBS Sports' Preseason Top 25.
Akot originally committed to Arizona as part of the 2018 class, but he will now graduate from high school early and enroll at Arizona next season.
The news likely hurts the Wildcats on the recruiting front, where 5-star wing Brian Bowen and Pittsburgh transfer Cam Johnson were awaiting word on Alkins' decision while considering heading to Arizona.
Arguably the best team on paper that Sean Miller has ever had as a head coach, Akot will settle in nicely on the perimeter, being used for his shooting, passing and defensive versatility.
