Magic hire Weltman to head basketball operations

On Monday, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported Orlando hired Toronto Raptors general manager Jeff Weltman to the position.

Weitmann joined the Raptors in 2013, and was promoted to GM under Masai Ujiri previous year. Before that, he had stretches with the Clippers, whom he started his National Basketball Association executive career with, as well as the Bucks and Nuggets.

Orlando parted ways with former general manager Rob Hennigan in April, and appointed Matt Lloyd as the club's interim GM.

The Magic turn to Weltman to try and help them escape the worst five-year stretch in franchise history. The Raptors have made four consecutive playoff appearances.

The Magic hoped to have a leader of the Basketball Operations department in place prior to the June 22nd NBA Draft.

Before Weltman joined the Raptors, he spent five years as a Milwaukee Bucks assistant general manager, one year as the Detroit Pistons' director of basketball administration and five years as an assistant general manager with the Denver Nuggets. The five-year deal he was given seems to indicate that Orlando understands that this will be a process that takes significant time, given what they now have on the roster.

Weltman has a rebuilding project ahead of him considering the Magic have suffered through five straight losing seasons.
