For IGN's thoughts on The Angry Birds Movie, which we called "a lighthearted and entertaining romp", read our Angry Birds review.
If the first film is anything to go by, The Angry Birds Movie 2 should be a blast for both adults, and children. Sony Pictures is going to distribute the new movie.
The sequel to "The Angry Birds Movie", which raked in $350 million worldwide, will be released on September 20, 2019, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the original Angry Birds game, Columbia Pictures announced Monday. The Angry Birds Movie 2 will also be co-directed by John Rice (Rick and Morty), who helmed the Angry Birds Hatchlings shorts and served as lead storyboard artist on The Angry Birds Movie.
Furthermore, the script is being penned by Peter Ackerman, a writer on Ice Age and The Americans. John Cohen, known for Despicable Me, will be producing.
Angry Birds characters Bomb, Chuck and Red are pictured during the premiere in Helsinki, Finland, May 11, 2016.
"We are thrilled to be teaming up again with Sony Pictures after the fantastic cooperation in the first movie and I can't wait to experience the new journey in the upcoming film", commented Kati Levoranta, CEO of Rovio Entertainment. The release of the new movie is going to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the original Angry Birds game. Animation for the film will be handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks. The animated movie grossed almost $350 million around the world, and $107.5 million in the U.S., according to Box Office Mojo. Angry Birds has fallen out of favor with many mobile gamers over the last few years, and Rovio has been scaling back its heavy reliance on the franchise.
