New York Yankees take game one on Jeter Day double header

Sunday night, The New York Yankees held ceremonies to retire his number and dedicate the plaque that has been placed in Monument Park.

The New York Yankees have officially retired Derek Jeter's No. 2 jersey.

Derek Jeter got his honor and moments later the Houston Astros got the second game of two off to a bang at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees will also unveil a plaque of Jeter in Monument Park.

Yankees co-owner Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal presented the 14-time All-Star with a 14-karat white gold ring with “2” in diamonds, surrounded by diamonds. The Yankees have now retired every single single-digit number. The honor cements the captain's legacy as one of the team - and sport's - greatest players.

The New York Yankees took a teeter-totter game out of the hands of the Astros today to set up a potential series split tonight on ESPN. Their scheduled Saturday game against the team was postponed because of heavy rain.

However, Derek Jeter was one of a kind. 2 was retired in a pregame series and he will now join the likes of Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth and Roger Maris in Yankees lore.

ET spoke with the Sports Illustrated model in February in New York City, where she revealed that she and Jeter want three kids down the line. "And I'll be eternally grateful to be part of the Yankees family".

"You get chills watching some of those moments: the flip, the home runs, the jump throws in the hole", said Bregman, whose only disappointment was he did not get to meet Jeter. "You don't come up requesting numbers when you're 20 years old, so I took what they gave me". "I don't know (if a doubleheader is ironic), I never thought of that, but I'm not so sure Derek was big on doubleheaders, so maybe that's something". "I didn't realize it then, but that was a look at how clutch he was going to be for a long time". We went out there day in and day out trying to win, trying to do anything to help the team and more importantly trying to keep our jobs.”. "You felt it, he wanted to be the guy".
