Lxi Thompson waves to the crowd after a birdie on the ninth hole during the final round of the Kingsmill Championship LPGA golf tournament in Williamsburg, Va., Sunday, May 21, 2017.
Thompson matched the lowest final round of her career and her first and second rounds with a 65, making this her sixth career event with four rounds in the 60s.
The asterisk won't be beside the tournament, but inside Thompson. Her last victory had come at the 2016 Honda LPGA Thailand, a span of 23 starts.
Lexi Thompson hopes she can finally put the ANA Inspiration rules mess behind her. The television viewer contacted the LPGA Tour the next day, and officials determined it was a clear violation.
Thompson credited her caddie, Kevin McAlpine, with keeping her levelheaded on and off the course in the aftermath of ANA. Annika Sorenstam held the previous record with a 19-under par mark in 2008.
The story wasn't about a new "Lexi Rule" but about Lexi ruling.
USA golf star Lexi Thompson won her eighth career LPGA title on Sunday, firing a six-under par 65 to capture the Kingsmill Championship by five strokes for her first victory of 2017. "Growing up with two older brothers [also pro golfers], I've always had that fire in me".
"I just couldn't let it get to me". Chun's approach shot hit the pin. That matches top-ranked Lydia Ko for the longest streak on tour. Under normal circumstances, her 15-under par would have been good enough to win the Kingsmill Championship.
Thompson's birdies on Nos. It was part of an announcement of a partnership with SEAL Legacy Foundation, a charity honoring Navy SEALs, and it also gave her pro-am playing partners quite a thrill. "That's why I'm allowed to do what I am today".
I've always had that fire in me.
It was the second time for Chun and Thompson to be competing for the trophy since Honda LPGA Thailand past year. And it was better than any the Kingsmill Championship had ever seen. "Ball-striking is definitely my strength, but you can't ball-strike it well every day". "I knew it was a shot that I definitely needed to pull off to be able to get my approach shot in there for birdie".
"Today I was a little off off the tee and kind of steered it around the golf course, but I'm not complaining with a 65, that's for sure", she said.
European - Alvaro Quiros beat Zander Lombard on the second hole of a playoff to win the Rocco Forte Open in Verdura, Sicily, and claim his first title in more than six years. She has since used it as fuel.
"She's a strong girl".
"I wasn't planning on it to go 180 yards, 190 yards through the fairway, but I caught it very clean", she said. She wasn't the only person who felt that way.
