The ECIR has been registered under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the ED stated.
While the sources refused to divulge the details of the evidence, they said that vouchers for payment of Rs 10 lakh to Chess Management by INX Media, company then owned by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, were part of the "quid pro quo".
While the ED did not clarify whether or not it would attach the assets of those named in the ECIR, the move comes as Karti Chidambaram left for London on Thursday night, while his office maintained that he had "gone on work and would be back by the end of May". He will return after a few days.
Law enforcement agencies on Tuesday raided the residences and properties of two top opposition leaders P Chidambaram of the Congress and Lalu Prasad of the RJD as well as businessmen in a multi-city crackdown on alleged corruption and benami properties.
The CBI has recently launched an investigation against both father and son related to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearances given to INX Media owned by Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani, who are now in jail in connection with their daughter Sheena Bora's murder.
Karti Chidambaram has denied all the charges made against him.
The charges include criminal conspiracy, cheating, taking gratification in order by corrupt or illegal means to influence public servant and criminal misconduct.
ED confirmed that they have received the preliminary reply filed by Karti, who is director of Advantage Strategic Consulting Private Limited. It adds that FIPB approved its fresh proposal "by virtue of influence exercised over them by Karti P Chidambaram" after roping in a Karti-owned company for consultancy.
"The government, using CBI and other agencies, is targeting my son and his friends".
FIPB approval was granted in "hundreds of cases", the senior Congress leader had said.
The FIPB clearance was given to Mumbai-based INX Media when it was run by Peter and Indrani Mukherjea, both accused in Sheena Bora murder case.
