Local law enforcement to honor those killed in the line of duty

Today is Peace Officers Memorial Day with all US and state flags flying at half-staff until sunset.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week. At the signing ceremony, Trump said that he would also request that American flags fly at half-mast to memorialize fallen officers, according to a pool report.

The monument honors over 20,000 law enforcement officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty throughout history.

The blue traffic lines serve a special reminder for the police officers in Franklin. The president previously used the color to mark World Autism Awareness Day. "I will say that and I will talk about that proudly", Trump said.

Shepard spoke about bills still being debated in the legislature that would benefit police officers, including one that would allow them to retire sooner.

The President asked the Justice Department to develop new strategies to prevent and prosecute violent crimes against officers.

"It's nice to see people outside of law enforcement haven't forgotten and it's nice for the Mayors Coalition and the Governor's Office to put things together for this". "It's just a nice way to honor their sacrifice and the commitment of the cops moving forward", said Parizek. Officers and community members gathered at Hendersonville Church of Christ to honor fallen officers.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Decrying violence against police, President Donald Trump honored the "brave souls" of law enforcement on Monday and vowed his administration would look for ways to reduce violence against police.
