Drake Breaks Adele's Billboard Awards Record

Miley Cyrus cried, Drake broke a record, and Cher made everyone "Believe": The 2017 Billboard Music Awards were filled with triumphant moments that celebrated both this year's achievements in music and the moments that led us here.

The British singer, 29, previously set the record in 2012 with 12 top honors.

"I got my whole family up here", said Drake, who stood onstage with almost two dozen people, including his father, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj. Of those nominees, only Drake and the Chainsmokers attended the Billboard Awards.

But other big names showed up.

She opened her performance with her 1998 hit Believe and finished with her career-defining 1989 record If I Could Turn Back Time.

Later on she showed up in one of Cher's iconic stage costumes and danced along to Cher's performance from the audience.

"I felt like I was the luckiest guy in the world anyway, because Gwen was here with me", the 40-year-old country crooner shared, in one of the sweetest moments of the night. And in her speech, she bragged that she can do a "five-minute plank".

She noted she was told early on that she never was the most lovely or the most talented, but she was special and added that "luck has so much to do with my success with a little bit of something thrown in". Another highlight was Celine Dion.

The special performance marked the 20th anniversary of the ballad, which earned an Oscar and a Golden Globe for best original song in 1997.

Rock fans were stunned to learn about the death of rocker Chris Cornell, who was found dead Thursday in his hotel room in Detroit. He called the Soundgarden and Audioslave singer "a true innovator", "a musical architect", "a prolific songwriting" and "a legendary performer" - as a large photo of Cornell singing with his eyes closed was displayed behind him.

"We send our respects as well as our love to Chris' family at this time", Reynolds said.

Even host Vanessa Hudgens got teary-eyed after the performance, while her co-host Ludacris urged the crowd on for another round of applause.

The 43-year-old showed off her underwear and revealed she was wearing a pair of tiny hot trousers underneath the ruffled number.

A few things that Lorde confirmed during her Billboard Music Awards performance: singing "Green Light" at karaoke is a blast; going to karaoke with Lorde is similarly great, especially when she picks her own song; and Lorde does not need to be standing up to unveil her gloriously twitchy dance moves.

Meanwhile, trailing behind Beyonce was Twenty One Pilots with four early awards. - Top collaboration: The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey, "Closer".

Beyoncé was also a big victor at the Billboard Music Awards.

Drake and The Chainsmokers were also announced as winners before the ceremony. The electronic dance duo and the rapper are the top contenders at Sunday’s show with 22 nominations each.

Drake was presented the top artist award by Prince Jackson, the late Michael Jackson's eldest son.

SHE celebrated her 71st birthday on the weekend, but music icon Cher can still compete with pop stars less than half her age. She won the trophies for Top Female Artist, Top Touring Artist, Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Tour and Top R&B Album for Lemonade.
