Hugh Jackman Says Early Drafts of 'Logan' Included Sabretooth

Hugh Jackman's big secret?

Hugh Jackman's tenure as Wolverine over the course of nine films and almost 17 years will go down in comic book cinematic history as one of the most committed portrayals in the genre. According to Jackman, he felt that appearing as the evil clone of Logan would be off-putting to the audience who have asked for a more aggressive and rage-filled Wolverine to appear in the film as he has in the comics. After almost two decades, Jackman's commitment to Wolverine culminated into James Mangold's near-masterpiece Logan. But that wasn't always the case.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Jackman admitted that when he first got the role he thought his character was just a play on a wolf. For one thing, he had no idea that a wolverine is a real creature.

Via Page Six, Jackson recalled that he spent a few weeks researching wolves after he was cast in the very first X-Men movie.

He recalled: "He said, 'Are you sort of walking amusing, what's going on?' And I said, 'I've been doing this thing with wolves, ' and he goes, 'You know you're not a wolf, right?' I said, 'Well, there's no such thing as a wolverine.' And he said; 'Go to the zoo, dude.' I literally didn't know it existed". "[Singer] said, 'Are you sort of walking amusing, what's going on?,'" recalled Jackman. It's sad to know that there is no existing footage of Jackman attempting to imitate an IMAX wolf documentary in portraying Wolverine - because it looks like that's basically what he did.

"I said, 'Well, there's no such thing as a wolverine, '" Hugh shared, to which he was told, "Go to the zoo, dude". "So I said no, because I didn't want to be "wolfy", like "Mr. Wolf".

A wolverine is a mammal that resembles a small bear but is actually the largest member of the weasel family.

In the movie, Wolverine - also known as the titular Logan - meets a noble end when defending X-23 and her fellow young mutants from the Reavers, but he thought it would have been "more powerful" if he didn't die. Jackman really made that role his own, and Logan was a fitting place to step aside from the character that made him into a star.
