Aamir Khans Dangal smashes records in China

While the film was expected to do well in China, given Aamir Khan's popularity in the country, no one really gauged that film will go on to become a huge success.

The wrestling movie, based on the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters, all Indian worldwide grapplers, made a good business here in India, raking up over Rs 700 crores (108,225,108 USD). We have probably not seen such remarkable performance of any Indian film in China!

China, which is viewed as a patriarchal society, has managed to connect with 'Dangal'.

While the film has struck a chord with many viewers, the backlash on the film reflects China's discomfort over feminism, say gender experts. Despite clashing with new releases, Baahubali 2 has continued to do well in its fourth week and collected Rs. 35 crore gross at the global box office on Friday and Saturday.

"The movie reeks of patriarchy and male chauvinism". Till today Aamir Khan's Weibo account has 5,86,591 followers, which is more than even PM Modi. He has total 1.69 lakhs followers over Weibo. The movie showed three engineering student's struggle, friendship, aspirations, and their self-actualizations. The film, which released across 9,000 theatres in China earlier this month, is being loved by everyone and has now collected over 649 crore at the Chinese box office. He is reportedly called Uncle Aamir Khan by his fans there. The actor, however, would have failed to bring the audience to the movie theaters if the content had failed to impress the Chinese audience. Dangal surprised trade pundits and critics alike. Dangal was based on a true story, but its artistic level - from the script-writing to the actors' and actresses' performance, and from the pace to the musical score - is awesome.

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the movie also stars Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif apart from Aamir and Fatima.
