David Goffin awaits the victor of Nadal's clash with Australian Kyrgios as the Belgian beat world No. 6 Milos Raonic of Canada 6-4, 6-2.

Number six seed Kei Nishikori came back after losing the first set to Diego Schwartzman to claim a 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 win, while number five seed Milos Raonic enjoyed a more straightforward 6-4, 6-4 victory against Giles Muller.

While Djokick leads the head-to-head rivalry by a 26-23 margin, Naadal holds a 9-4 edge against the Serbian in Grand Slam events and a 4-3 record in Grand Slam finals.

However, the two haven't met for almost a year during which time Djokovic's form has dramatically dipped.

"On his slump, 99 per cent of players would love to be in his position", said Nadal.

“I couldnt imagine this when I woke up this morning, I always believed but I wasnt sure how I was going to play.

Novak Djokovic overcame stiff resistance from Feliciano Lopez to book his place in the quarter-finals of Madrid Masters with a 6-4 7-5 win.

Djokovic was not broken in the 93-minute clash, and faced just one break point.

Top-ranked Andy Murray made his debut at the Madrid Open with a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 win over wild card Marius Copil of Romania in the second round on Tuesday.

Goffin - beaten by Nadal in the last four in Monte Carlo - served to stay in the set at 5-4 and started with a nervy double fault but, amid the tension of being taken to deuce, ended it with a pinpoint forehand and a commanding overhead smash.

The other quarterfinal will be played between Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay, who defeated Benoit Paire of France 7-5, 0-6, 6-1, and Alexander Zverev of Germany, who beat Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4.

Cuevas will play ninth-ranked Dominic Thiem of Austria, who comfortably defeated lucky loser Borna Coric of Croatia 6-1, 6-4.

"It's the first match without my team that's been with me for 10 years", he said.

"I feel like (at) home here". The courts fit me.

Nadal was below his best and it was not until he took a decisive break in the final game, just after having his own set broken that the match was finally decided.

By comparing Djokovic to Bret "The Hitman" Hart, Isner was trying to draw "some parallels between the two worlds that I know best: the ATP World Tour and the WWE", and surely no one in the tennis world of that time deserved the tag more than Djokovic.

Sevastova hinted at a fightback early in the second as she got out to a 3-0 lead. "Winning is very important but also the way I'm playing at the moment makes me very relaxed".
