S Carolina's unemployment rate drops slightly to 4.3 percent

According to figures released Friday by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, the unemployment rate last month in Manatee County was 3.6 percent, down from 3.9 percent in March and 4.2 percent in April 2016. The unemployment rate was 5.3-percent in April, which is down from 6.3-percent in March. In March 2017 the jobless rate was 5.1 percent.

Unemployment fell to 4.4 percent, its lowest level since May 2007.

Monroe County had the state's lowest unemployment rate, at 2.6 percent, but St. Johns County's is 3 percent is the second lowest in Florida.

EDD noted that non-farm payroll employment statewide totaled 16,681,200 in April, which actually represented a net loss of 16,300 jobs from March.

Washington has added an estimated 76,500 new jobs from April 2016 through April 2017, not seasonally adjusted. "But we have more work to do in helping to match the unemployed with the job openings across the state".

All told, 19 states had unemployment rates lower than the national average of 4.4 percent. Looking ahead, state economists still expect the tightening job market to eventually push up wages, possibly starting this year, he said.

Florida had 460,000 people without jobs out of a labor force of 10,142,000.

Moderate gains were reported in leisure and hospitality (+2,500), trade-transportation-utilities (+2,400) and other services (+1,300).

Both the state and local unemployment rates remained well below the national rate, which was 4.4 percent in April. "When we get to unemployment rates this low it's natural that you can't sustain the growth rate that you had", he said. Manufacturing lost 5,800 jobs and state government lost 2,600 jobs.

The state Department of Workforce Services said Arkansas' civilian labor force rose by 6,782, the result of 7,693 more employed and 911 fewer unemployed Arkansans. The largest job growth sector, with 1,200 new jobs, was education and health services.

The dip came in spite of slowing job gains, which might indicate that employers are having trouble finding workers. About 20 percent of those who are marked as unemployed are job leavers, he said, which is a normal percentage.

"Whether this preliminary over-the-month rise in the unemployment rate stands up to the inclusion of more data during annual processing will be determined next year once additional data is considered", he wrote.
