Rajnath Singh speaks to Parrikar over Goa bridge collapse

One person has been confirmed dead and more than 30 are believed to be missing following the collapse of an old bridge in Curchorem town in South Goa late on Thursday evening.

Reports suggest that around 10 people have been rescued so far. Around 50 people had fallen in the river following the collapse of the bridge.

"We do not know the exact number but it is being assumed that around 50 people must have fallen in the river".

Some of them managed to swim ashore, he added.

"People who were keen on witnessing the rescue operation for a youth who had jumped into the river to commit suicide removed the barricades on the bridge", he said.

"The number of casualties is still not known", he said.

The Navy has been called in for rescue operations and the Chief Minister is also tracking the situation. Only pedestrians were using it, a local resident said.As the search and rescue operation started by the fire services, many local residents rushed to the bridge to watch the operation. "Four persons were rescued and are rushed to the hospital", SP (South Goa) Shekhar Prabhudesai told TOI. Search and rescue ops have been intensified.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he spoke to Parrikar following the bridge collapse reports.
