Ex-Moto GP champion Hayden 'critical' after cycling crash

"The young man, who is still in the intensive care unit of Cesena's Bufalini Hospital, has suffered a serious polytrauma with subsequent serious cerebral damage".

A morning bulletin from the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena where Hayden has been taken confirmed he remained in intensive care and that there had been no change in his condition. "The prognosis remains reserved".

If you're following the news, you might have heard that Team Red Bull Honda racer Nicky Hayden suffered a nasty accident this week in Italy.

From the past season, he returned to the Superbike Championship with the Red Bull World Superbike Honda, replacing Sylvain Guintoli alongside Michel van der Mark.

Hayden, from Owensboro, Kentucky, was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital near Rimini before being transfered to the facility in Cesana.

Another channel said hat he has been placed under the medically induced coma.

UPDATE: Nicky has now been joined by his brother Tommy and mother Rose who arrived in Italy from the United States earlier today. He was 13th in the points following the latest Superbike race at Imola.

"Nicky is one of the best friends I've ever had in the paddock", wrote the seven-time MotoGP champion on Instagram.

He has 218 MotoGP races under his belt and won the world title with Repsol Honda 11 years ago - ending Valentino Rossi's streak of five successive championship victories - and also raced for Ducati before switching to the Superbike circuit last year.

"The most lovely thing I have about him is when he gave his hand to me after the unlucky race of Valencia 2015, on the lap of honour".

"Come on Nicky, we're all with you", he said.

Britain's Tour de France champion Chris Froome escaped unhurt this month while having his bike written off in a hit-and-run incident near his Monaco home.
