Trump Asked FBI's Comey to Drop Flynn Inquiry

Putin's remarks on May 17 came a day after political tension in Washington increased again following reports that Trump appealed to FBI Director James Comey in February to drop an investigation into Michael Flynn, the national security adviser who was forced out after making misleading statements about his contacts with Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak.

We are writing to request that the Oversight Committee and the Judiciary Committee launch an immediate joint investigation into whether President Donald Trump and his top officials are engaged in an ongoing conspiracy to obstruct the criminal, counter-intelligence, and oversight investigations now being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice, and Congress into members of his presidential campaign and their contacts with Russian officials.

Interfering with a federal investigation might constitute obstruction of justice and could potentially be invoked in any attempt to impeach Trump.

News reports, for example, say that Trump is furious with his son-in-law for recommending Comey's firing.

"The President is in dire need of a criminal defense lawyer and a congressional investigations lawyer immediately", said former prosecutor Kirby Behre of Miller & Chevalier in an email.

The White House downplayed the report, however, saying at no time did Trump ask or order Comey or any other law enforcement official to stop an investigation, including the Russian Federation probe. Yates was sacked soon after because, the White House said, she refused to defend the president's travel ban in court.

This, however, requires the support of a majority of members of the House of Representatives.

It asked acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe to hand over any notes Comey has of conversations between the White House and Justice Department officials about the Russian Federation probe.

Many Democratic critics of Trump's have raised the possibility that such a suggestion by Trump could amount to obstruction of justice, an impeachable offense. "We need answers, and fast", said U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop, R-Rochester.

With the news of the Comey memo, Democrats have increased their talks about impeaching Trump. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., a former US attorney.

A separate letter, addressed to acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, sought notes or memos written by Comey about conversations he had with senior White House and Department of Justice officials related to the Russian Federation investigation.

House Oversight Committee Chairman U.S. Sen. Joseph, didn't call for an independent investigation but said he remains open to one if it is proposed.

"Public trust is on the line and the country deserves answers sooner rather than later", he said, adding that Congress needs "all of the facts surrounding the firing of FBI Director Comey".

White House lawyers have a duty to protect the interests of the presidency even when those interests diverge from the president's individual concerns, said Savannah Law School professor Andy Wright, a former associate counsel to President Obama.
