Ravichandran Ashwin, who is missing the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) with an injury, was named in the squad.
Rohit returned from a thigh injury and the right-hander will be joined by southpaw Shikhar Dhawan, who owes his own comeback primarily to a shoulder injury for Lokesh Rahul.
Mohammad Shami: Shami, selected as fifth pace-bowling option, has not played an ODI since 2015 World Cup.
"We considered Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik and Shardul Thakur".
Putting an end to the controversial situation, the BCCI has confirmed India's participation in the all-important ICC Champions Trophy scheduled to be held from the 1st of June 2017 in England and Wales. In Dhoni, the team has a calm head, who understands 50-over cricket better than most.
India defeated England in the final at Edgbaston four years ago and are seeking a repeat performance as the tournament returns to the United Kingdom, starting next month.
After weeks of confusing and disagreement between BCCI and ICC, the Indian board has finally revealed the side to defend the Champions Trophy and there were no surprises.
On Monday, chief selector MSK Prasad announced the 15-men squad at a press conference in Mumbai.
Opener Shikhar Dhawan and middle-order batsman Manish Pandey made a comeback but warhorses Harbhajan Singh and Gautam Gambhir failed to make the list. Dhawan is not a regular member of the Indian team in all formats and in fact has only played two global matches - ODIs against England - in the past six months. He last played for India in October 2016 against New Zealand. "Not just IPL but one needs to take into account the performance of last one year also in such a big tournament,". The swashbuckling all-rounder is also in the squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2017.
India are in Group B for the competition, facing Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. R Ashwin, who is now recovering from a sports hernia, and Ravindra Jadeja can perhaps expect part-time assistance from Yuvraj Singh, who kept his spot after his ODI career was given a re-start in the series against England in January.
