Rich Hill Returns, But Giants Deal Dodgers Another Loss, 2-1

Giants left-hander Ty Blach finally got his first win of the season and was quick to spread the credit around.

San Francisco Giants' Christian Arroyo, right, prepares to throw to first base past Los Angeles Dodgers' Chris Taylor (3) to complete a double play during the first inning of a baseball game Tuesday, May 16, 2017, in San Francisco. A timely home run by Brandon Belt and an even more clutch tiebreaking hit from Brandon Crawford helped, too. At AT&T Park, the Giants starters have a 1.91 ERA against the Dodgers in six games. These two teams met in Los Angeles recently and Cueto out-dueled Kershaw in a close game. "He knows these hitters so well, so just being able to know that you've got confidence in him, that makes it a lot easier for you". He is 2-0 against the Dodgers this season, having allowed just one run and seven hits in 12 2/3 innings. "He was on top of his game".

Among pitchers Belt has more than 12 at-bats against, the only pitcher he's fared worse against is Shelby Miller, going just 1 for 24. NL MVP Kris Bryant added two hits in his first appearance after missing three games with an illness.

San Francisco improved to 5-1 on its homestand after a sluggish nine-game road trip when Bochy's ballclub won only three games.

"I felt good. The ball came out of my hand well", said Hill to reporters after the game.

Blach got out of a couple of early jams and he was temporarily rewarded for it. Blach worked around two walks in the first and two hits in the fourth, and in the bottom of that inning he got a lead when Belt hit his eighth homer.

With the score 1-1, Crawford hit the first pitch he saw from Dodgers reliever Luis Avilan (0-1) into right field to chase Brandon Belt home from third with one out.

The San Francisco Giants are barely out of last.

Matt Cain pitched effectively into the seventh inning, and the Giants supported him with a four-run fourth inning that included a two-run infield single, leading to an 8-4 victory in the opener of a three-game series.

Left-handed batters are hitting.289/.304/.600 this season off Kershaw, with three home runs in 46 plate appearances.

The lefty hit leadoff man Denard Span in the batting helmet with a 73 miles per hour curve on his fifth pitch of the first inning, then was called for a balk moments later.

"We're getting the starting pitching for the most part we need", Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. With runners at second and third and one out, Austin Barnes hit a fairly slow grounder to Arroyo. "I thought that was a success". Other than that, Blach along with Hunter Strickland (H, 2, 1.26 ERA) and Derek Law (S, 4, 2.75 ERA) silenced the LA offense.

"We're not completely on track, but it's a good start what we're doing right now", Bochy said.

The Dodgers have lost their last three games, matching their longest skid of the season, also done April 16-18.

To make room for Melancon, utilityman Kelby Tomlinson was sent down to Triple-A Sacramento.
