Milwaukee Sheriff Clarke Going to U.S. Homeland Security

Clarke said in an interview with WISN-AM on Wednesday that he will work as a liaison in the Office of Partnership and Engagement, coordinating with state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies. The post does not require Senate confirmation.

"I'm both honored and humbled to be appointed to this position by Secretary Kelly, working for the Trump administration", he said during the radio show. Burke says the department has no such announcement about Clarke.

Clarke has become a conservative darling through his provocative social media presence and was a strong supporter of Donald Trump during the presidential campaign.

"It's no wonder Clarke was seeking an escape from his Milwaukee County mess before the next election, as he is facing communitywide anger for his gross mismanagement of the Milwaukee County Jail, including the recent tragic death of Terrill Thomas by dehydration".

The Department of Homeland Security, created after the September 11, 2001, attacks on NY and the Pentagon, includes agencies that handle customs, border protection and immigration, the Coast Guard, the Transportation Security Administration and the Secret Service.

Last year, the frequent Fox News guest earned more than $105,000 in speaking fees - nearly as much as his sheriff's salary - at more than three dozen events across the country. He spoke in support of Trump at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland last July. A grand jury has recommended criminal charges against several jail staffers over Thomas' death. The group has recently been critical of Clarke for his desire to have his sheriff's deputies trained to carry out the duties of immigration enforcement officials as part of the federal 287g program. Walker's office said the application process for interested applicants will last for about two weeks, followed by interviews.

Overall, Clarke, a conservative who runs as a Democrat, has been elected four times. The search for a successor, Evenson said, won't begin until Walker's office receives that notice.

He defeated challenger Chris Moews in the August 2014 Democratic primary to ensure re-election that year.
