Ryan insisted Congress will exercise its oversight role and gather more information before reaching any conclusions about the president's firing of FBI Director James Comey, as well as reports Trump shared sensitive information with the Russians and urged Comey to drop an investigation of a former adviser. Ryan said, echoing questions from other skeptical Republicans.
"I have not talked to another person in Congress", he said. "Our job is to get the facts", he said.
While we hope that Congress will be serious about its constitutional oversight role, we believe the issues raised by the Comey memos are so vital that the public should have access to them without delay.
Democrats and some Republicans have called for the correspondence to be released.
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., also argued an independent commission would have the resources necessary to fully investigate the president's actions.
The White House has played down the importance and secrecy of the information Trump gave to the Russians, which had been supplied by Israel under an intelligence-sharing agreement. Trump himself said he had "an absolute right" as president to share "facts pertaining to terrorism" and airline safety with Russian Federation.
Originally designed as a high-drama debut for a President who still draws wide skepticism from much of the world, the trip has now taken on new scrutiny for a White House in desperate need of a win. Making light of the matter at a news conference in the Russian city of Sochi, Putin said Russia was ready to hand a transcript of the meeting to US lawmakers if that would help reassure them.
"It's centipede and the shoe continues to drop", McCain said Tuesday night, after news broke that Trump asked former FBI director James B. Comey to drop the investigation on former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Above all, they are demanding a special prosecutor to lead the investigation of Russia's meddling in last year's presidential election. The White House is denying the account.
Sen. Angus King (I-ME), who caucuses with Democrats, was asked by Wolf Blitzer on CNN whether we're moving closer to an impeachment. "The President must be impeached", Green said on the floor.
And the reason Trump tweeted what he did about Comey is because the New York Times had just reported Trump sought a loyalty pledge from Comey at a dinner shortly after Trump's inauguration. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and White House National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn will meet with the moderate Tuesday Group.
The conversation occurred weeks after the Federal Bureau of Investigation interviewed Flynn regarding his contacts with the Russian Federation ambassador to the United States and after the acting attorney general, Sally Yates, warned the White House that Flynn had misled them about those conversations and could be vulnerable to blackmail.
A minor diplomatic spat emerged between U.S. and Israeli officials Monday while preparing for Trump's visit to the Western Wall in Jerusalem - the first stop by a sitting USA president to one of the holiest sites in Judaism.
He and other Democrats said Comey must testify before lawmakers about his conversations with the president. "Memos, transcripts, tapes - the list keeps getting longer", he said.
