Titles more important than top four to Manchester United, says Mourinho

Chris Sutton has hit out at Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho for his "nonsense" post-match comments after Tottenham beat Manchester United 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United have come unstuck to Southampton in recent seasons too, suffering a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford in January 2016 and January 2015.

And Red Devils boss Mourinho says Pogba will not be back in time for Wednesday's trip to St Mary's Stadium as he will be attending the funeral. "I think he deserves another chance".

"I hope we can enjoy something similar after the final in Stockholm", the Spaniard stressed. "The semis against Celta were tough".

The 20-time English champions are in the final of the Europa League, but unlike their opponents Ajax, who have 12 days to prepare, United will have just three days after the final weekend of the league on 21 May.

"When people say we gamble, we didn't gamble, we didn't choose the Europa League - we had to do it".

"But I have to build some teams with the minimum of conditions to fight for the result".

"If they are motivated I think we can be Manchester United because, even losing like we did against Arsenal, there are certain levels of performance and attitude that we have to keep". But the way they perform can influence me positively or negatively so they have to get that as their main motivation.

"I go always until the end of the competitions".

Mourinho has appeared unimpressed by the number of games the England trio of Smalling, Luke Shaw and Phil Jones have missed this season, repeatedly querying if some of his players have the right mental attitude. I can not put four or five other kids all together in the fire; I can not do that to the kids.

There were no injuries and it's one less match to play because at this moment the Premier League matches for us are matches we don't want to play.

United's financial officer Cliff Baty said: "For us the bigger prize is Adidas and Champions League". "We know that, but we fight for trophies and probably other clubs finishing in the top four would like to be in our position to try and fight for the trophy", he added. The players that needed to play 90 minutes did it, that was important for them. It is not one more victory, one more point, one more defeat that will change anything.
