The good fortune belonged to two of the NBA's most-storied franchises.
The pick comes to the Celtics from the Brooklyn Nets, who finished with the worst record in the National Basketball Association this season and traded the right to swap first-round picks to the Celtics in the 2013 deal that sent Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett away from Boston.
New Orleans placed a top-three protection on its pick during the trade, meaning if the Pelicans were able to move into the top three of the draft on Tuesday night, they would be able to keep their 2017 pick.
"I was very excited and happy", Johnson said on the Lakers' Twitter feed.
The No. 2 spot for the Lakers means they could be in position to select Lonzo Ball, the local star from UCLA who dazzled in his lone college season.
Ball and his camp have made it abundantly clear that they would prefer to play for the Lakers.
The Lakers were awarded the second pick, and the 76ers the third. "I wish the draft were today we could get a little help for tomorrow night".
The Nuggets have never moved up in the draft lottery in 15 appearances.
The only players now on the Pelicans roster that were added to the team through the draft are forwards Anthony Davis (2012 first-round pick) and Cheick Diallo (2016 second-round pick).
"We'll go through the strategy of what we have to do as we go along here", Jackson said. There will never be another Dirk, and what's more, he isn't a good fit for the roster as now constructed. Those things will try to be addressed in the draft and moving into free agency and trades. Phoenix fell two spots and is fourth. The Sixers landed the No. 3 pick thanks to a pick swap with the Sacramento Kings, who got the Sixers pick at No. 5.
The Magic got the sixth pick, followed by the Timberwolves, the Knicks and the Mavericks. Chance for top-three pick: 4 percent 11. With a dream of picking at No. 1 overall and a danger of sliding to No. 10, the Knicks' future was decided at the 2017 NBA Draft Lottery. NY had 5.3 percent odds of securing the No. 1 overall selection, 6.0 percent odds of going No. 2, and 7.0 percent odds of receiving the No. 3 draft pick. The Celtics defeated the Wizards in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Monday and will now add the No. 1 pick - Washington guard Markelle Fultz, perhaps - to an already talented roster.
