Comey recently began getting daily instead of weekly reports on the probe, according to the Journal, with the focus appearing to be on companies that have done business with Trump or that have some connection to him. Frances Townsend, who served in the George W Bush administration as a White House homeland security and counterterrorism adviser, posted several photos on her Twitter and Instagram accounts snapped while inside the White House on Monday afternoon, ABC News reported.
Lawmakers reportedly asked Comey if he could speed up his investigation. Richard Burr of North Carolina, chairman of the Senate intelligence committee, said, "I am troubled by the timing and reasoning of Director Comey's termination".
The decision to fire Comey amid an ongoing FBI investigation into ties between the Russian government and members of Trump's 2016 campaign has raised concerns that Trump was trying to undermine a probe that could threaten his presidency. And Trump's action left the fate of the Russian Federation probe deeply uncertain.
But press secretary Sean Spicer earlier said the president fired Comey because he was advised to do so, "based on the clear recommendations of both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions".
Several lawmakers questioned the timing of Comey's removal because the FBI is investigating Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election, including any possible links between the Trump campaign and Moscow. Comey eventually asked the deputy attorney general for more money to support the operation. Sanders claimed that Trump had not chose to fire Comey before asking for the memo and did not make the decision until Tuesday.
"Donald Trump just fired the one man in America who was leading the most thorough and long-lasting investigation of Donald Trump", Jo Comerford, campaign director for MoveOn.org, said in a statement. In a series of morning tweets, he said both Democrats and Republicans "will be thanking me".
Comey has been criticized by Democrats for his handling of an investigation surrounding 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state.
Trump had been considering letting Comey go "since the day he was elected" in November, Sanders said. She said Trump became concerned about Comey's efforts to work outside the Justice Department's chain of command during the Clinton investigation, citing congressional testimony from last week that provided more details of his actions previous year.
He said Federal Bureau of Investigation agents asked him about an intelligence assessment released by the Obama administration, which concluded that senior Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, wanted to undermine the USA democratic process, hurt Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and help Trump's campaign.
"Over the past year, however, the FBI's reputation and credibility have suffered substantial damage, and it has affected the entire Department of Justice".
Huckabee Sanders stressed that the White House wants the Justice Department to continue its investigation into Russian Federation and the election so that it can move on from the issue. Trump had been thinking about replacing Comey since Election Day, she said.
