The Boston Celtics took a 1-0 lead in their National Basketball Association play-off conference semi-final showdown against the Washington Wizards with a 123-111 comeback victory.
Thomas and the Celtics will be at home, at Boston's TD Garden, to face the Wizards on Tuesday for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
But after dropping those first two games to the Chicago Bulls in which their emotional leader had just learned of the tragic death of his sister, the Celtics have now won five straight games.
But the Celtics forced seven Wizards turnovers in the second period and made only one as Thomas scored 18 of Boston's first 36 points and the hosts pulled within 67-64 at half-time.
After a high-scoring first half, which saw Washington going into the break with a 67-64 lead, the visitors used a 14-0 run to help extend their advantage to 81-67 with 7:57 to go in the third quarter. Earlier, Thomas landed in Boston at 4 A.M. on Sunday, just nine hours before Game 1 of the second-round series between his Boston Celtics and the Washington Wizards.
Thomas became just the fifth Celtic in franchise history to tally at least 50 points in a playoff game, and finished just one point shy of John Havlicek's team record of 54.
The problem is that they scored only 42 points in the second and third quarters combined, all while Boston knocked down half a million three-pointers.
He intends to play in Game 2.
Otto Porter Jr. hit a 3-pointer to give the Wizards a 114-112 lead with 33 seconds left in the fourth. Bogdanovic scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter. "I chose to play and I just tried to give it all for my team". "But they say that he's doing really well from a recovery standpoint, which is positive".
Both teams were tied 114-114 at the end of regulation, after Thomas made two free throws to knot the scores and both Wall and Bradley Beal missed attempts for potential game-winners in the final 1.9 seconds. The reason was because Markieff Morris went down with a left ankle sprain and Kelly Oubre took over his spot. Celtics G Isaiah Thomas underwent a dental procedure to replace a tooth he lost during Game 1 on Monday.
Then Sunday's game brought the latest dose of adversity, when he had one of his front teeth dislodged after an early game collision.
I think we've done so much not to be viewed in that light. Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant (17 each) and Klay Thompson (15) both scored more points than Utah's top-scorer Rudy Gobert (13). Or will Boston take a 2-0 series lead?
"He's one of the biggest winners in this league", Wizards coach Scott Brooks said.
