He continues his bid for that distinction on Saturday at UFC 211 in Dallas when he rematches Junior dos Santos.
But as much as he loves being a UFC champion, Miocic also had to address his latest toy... a metal detector! Dos Santos showed up in vintage form, looking fast, powerful and accurate, as he picked apart "Big" Ben for the duration of the fight.
Dos Santos, who had his turn as "that guy" a few years ago, is one of only two men to defeat Miocic in his 18-fight MMA career. "I had a swollen eye and some stitches inside my mouth, but it's part of the game, I guess; a lot of bumps and bruises".
Heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic gets in a training session, some of which he's using a racquet ball in, and then jokes around with his wife at home before heading to CT to do some ESPN work. His win against Werdum got him the UFC heavyweight title and he defended it against Overeem four month later. It was a hard fight for both of us and we learned a lot from each other. I'm going to do it, but I'm not going to worry about it. I've gotten better every fight. I've been working and I feel prepared.
With the punching power dos Santos possesses, he's never out of a bout.
Miocic may have fell short to dos Santos in their first encounter, but he is grateful because the fight helped him grow.
"I'm a very confident guy; I like to be positive".
Living an "amazing" moment of his life, crowned by the recent arrival of his first-born, Dos Santos is even feeling a little ... musical.
The UFC continues to flesh out its female roster, revealing this week that the next "Ultimate Fighter" could feature women competing at 125 pounds and a tentative plan of crowning a champion in the new division at the end of a season-long tournament.
I have yet to feel like someone is on Jedrzejczyk's level and don't think she loses just yet.
On Episode 1 of UFC 211 Embedded, strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk follows up a first class flight with a first-class workout in Florida. The titleholder since 2015, Jedrzejczyk is the second-longest reigning champion among active UFC titleholders. He is predicting the fight to get over before the end of the second round.
While that may sound like a test of endurance and dedication that is too daunting to tackle, trust me when I tell you that you're going to want to be seated and staring at your TV (or monitor or phone or whatever) from the time the televised prelims get underway at 5 p.m. on TSN5.
