A confident Canelo didn't bother to sit in his order after the seventh round, in a fight that wasn't almost as competitive as hoped. But UFC president Dana White, who was at T-Mobile Arena watching Alvarez-Chavez, revealed September 16 also was his hopeful date for McGregor vs. Mayweather if the two sides could come to an agreement.
Some four hours before countrymen Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez squared off in the super middleweight main event at T-Mobile Arena, thousands of fans were outside the arena in full party mode, chanting either "Canelo" or "Chavez". And truthfully, the fight may have been just a platform for what happened after he won by unanimous decision over Cesar Chavez Jr.
Boxing's next big fight has a chance to land at AT&T Stadium. Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, aka 'GGG, ' met in the center of the ring and announced that they will lock horns and fight on September 16.
"Tonight, I showed I could move, I could box", Alvarez said. "I know it's been done elsewhere, but tonight it feels really special doing it in this fight". The deal with Golovkin was signed a week earlier but successfully kept under wraps.
Alvarez had no choice after relinquishing his WBC belt a year ago to Golovkin when he declined to reach a fight deal.
A potential Mayweather-McGregor boxing match is naturally divisive for a number of reasons, not least amongst practitioners of both boxing and MMA. "How many power punches because the number must be huge".
It's unfortunate timing as with McGregor's son being born on Friday night, it had been hoped that he would now finally be able to forge ahead with plans to finalize negotiations with Mayweather over their much-talked about boxing match.
The fight was at a catch weight of 164.5 pounds and frankly, Chavez Jr appeared drained.
"I could have done better but I hurt my hand after round two", Lemieux said.
Fans were universally excited to hear the announcement of Canelo vs. GGG, considering how easily the Mexican star disposed of Chavez Jr. And unfortunately for the fans, they did not witness a competitive fight as Alvarez jabbed and otherwise out-punched Chavez on his way to a shutout victory Saturday before 20,510.
