Dianne Feinstein of California came in response to media reports that Kushner Companies representatives - including Kushner's sister, Nicole Meyer - marketed use of the EB-5 investor visa program to Chinese nationals at a conference in Beijing over the weekend.
Nicole Kushner Meyer, Jared's sister, mentioned her brother's new role in the administration during a pitch for her family's property in New Jersey.
The Kushner family told a group of 100 wealthy Chinese investors Saturday that they could secure immigration visas to the USA with an investment of half a million dollars, several media outlets revealed.
At Saturday's event, attendee Wang Yun, a Chinese investor, said the Kushner family's ties to Trump were an obvious part of the project's appeal.
The investment would be faciliated via the EB-5 immigrant visa program, which offers citizens of other countries the chance to immigrate to the USA, provided they invest at least USD500,000 American development projects, according to the New York Times. In late March, Kushner Companies ended talks with Anbang Insurance Group-which has ties to the Chinese government-to redevelop a NY office tower, after critics pointed out the potential conflicts on interest.
Kushner Companies "apologizes if that mention of [Kushner] was in any way interpreted as an attempt to lure investors", the company said in a statement emailed to NPR and other news outlets.
Speaking in a ballroom [in Beijing], Ms. Meyer said the project "means a lot to me and my entire family". Qiaowai says on its website (in Chinese only) that the project is the 87th EB-5 project it has marketed in China, and also its second time working with the Kushners. It is also to be noted that in 2014, almost 90% of the EB-5 visas were issued to Chinese nationals.
But Trump, who has made cracking down on immigration a cornerstone of his presidency, signed a bill extending the EB-5 visa program the day before Meyer's presentation. The minimum investment requirement is $1 million, unless the project is in a rural area or high-unemployment area.
Jared Kushner had been listed as a manager of several entities related to the project as of January, the New York Times reported.
But Kushner's sweeping role in the White House has included brokering U.S.
One brochure promoting the apartment towers said, "Invest $500,000 and immigrate to the United States".
Meyer never mentioned the president's name during the investor event, but Trump's photo was seen in a slide at the conference that detailed the "key decision makers" on the EB-5 program, CNN reports.
Earlier this month, Congress extended the EB-5 program in its current form through September 30.
One Journal Square has also faced local pushback since Meyer pitched the Jersey City project to foreign investors over the weekend.
His attorney, Blake Roberts, said Saturday that Kushner is not involved in the operation of Kushner Companies and divested his interests in the Journal Square project by selling them to a family trust that he, his wife and his children are not beneficiaries of, which was suggested by the Office of Government Ethics.
Ivanka Trump's sister-in-law recently visited Beijing and Shanghai to market "investor visas" to wealthy Chinese citizens. In the past, the program has been described as "citizenship for sale," and has been entangled in fraud and abuse scandals, according to the Center for Immigration Studies organization.
