A close friend of Crosby's, he had been emotional when the Penguins captain suffered yet another concussion.
The Capitals defenceman was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for cross-checking the Penguins captain and National Hockey League superstar in the first period of Monday night's Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.
Crosby was cross-checked in the head in Monday's Game 3 by Washington defenseman Matt Niskanen, a former Penguin.
We'll see where this goes, I don't really expect Sullivan to give much of an update at noon "We're happy he was able to skate, great step in his progression so he's feeling pretty good and we'll take it day-to-day from here but don't know status for next game" is about what I would predict an hour before the call.

A flick of Hornqvist's wrists and the puck sailed over Holtby's glove and under the crossbar 4:39 into the first period. That will likely be the case in Game 3 Wednesday night. During the regular season, Washington allowed 3.5 rush shots per 60 minutes at even strength, which has ballooned to a whopping 5.8 per 60 in the playoffs, with 11 of the 45 rush shots Holtby has faced coming in the last four games against Pittsburgh, resulting in five goals against. In the 117 games Malkin has played without Crosby, Malkin has had 66 goals and 88 assists.
In the process, the Penguins grabbed a 3-1 advantage in the series with a chance to clinch Saturday at Verizon Center in Washington.
Holtby, the reigning Vezina Trophy victor and a finalist again this season, has a.867 save percentage and a 3.00 goals-against average in the series and has been consistently outplayed by Marc-Andre Fleury, who has a.937 save percentage and 2.24 GAA in the series.
Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nate Schmidt both scored for the Capitals in the second-period.
In the first two games of this series, Penguins' wins in Washington, we saw Crosby at the absolute height of his powers.
Lucic put Edmonton in front with a power-play goal at 15:38, and McDavid swept the puck over Gibson at 17:43 for his second goal of the series and fifth of the postseason. The natural reaction when you get is your head snaps back a little bit.
Said goaltender Braden Holtby: "We have nothing to save it for". "I'm sure there's some people that think it's great sacrifice, and I'm sure there's some people that think it's stupid and pointless". Without him, the Penguins gritted their way to three goals on 18 shots Wednesday.
