Why is Star Wars Day celebrated on May the Fourth?

MAY the fourth isn't just another date on the Gregorian calendar. Basically, take in the day with any and all things Star Wars.

Finn and his new friend Rose might be horsing around in a galaxy far, far away soon enough. But all the franchise's live-action movie premieres in May, past and future take place in the latter weeks of the month.

Thursday is the second-biggest day of the year for "Star Wars" fans. From wonderful back drops to special work days, the Star Wars fans of the world did not disappoint.

The original Star Wars film, written and directed by George Lucas, was released in 1977, making stars of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, who died a year ago. The London Evening News ran a headline that read "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie", and since then, the day has belonged to Star Wars fans.

Grand Admiral Thrawn's re-introduction into the Star Wars canon was a delight for many who grew up in the early 1990s.
