While a return to the traditional summer release window will be welcome for Star Wars veterans after consecutive Christmas releases, we wouldn't go booking the day off work just yet.
Lucasfilm recently unveiled the first footage of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which releases on December 15, during Star Wars Celebration. Fans will also have to wait an entire year between the Han Solo film, which will open on May 25, 2018, and Episode IX.
These are all USA release dates, of course, but Australians can expect similar if not the same dates - particularly when it comes to Star Wars.
Since the franchise was rebooted, all the films - including The Force Awakens, Rogue One and upcoming Last Jedi - have enjoyed December premieres. However, it does appear as if Disney and Lucasfilm are digging in their heels with this film, and will attempt to try their luck with a summer release schedule. Still without a proper title, Episode 9 will wrap up the third trilogy of mainline Star Wars films, presumably finishing the story that involves Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren. In fact, The Last Jedi was originally penciled in to be released in May of this year. Both Steven Spielberg, director of every Indiana Jones film, and star Harrison Ford will return.
Lucas, who created the Star Wars series in 1977, always intended the franchise to span nine films and shared his ideas for Episode VII, VIII and IX when he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012.
"Star Wars: Episode IX" is set to fly into theaters on May 24, 2019, Disney announced on Tuesday.
While a similar move is possible this time around, it is likely Disney wants to keep "Holiday 2019" reserved for another of its own big hitters - Frozen 2.
