Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber announced Tuesday night that Roy Oliver, six-year veteran Balch Springs police officer who shot and killed 15-year-old Mesquite high school freshman Jordan Edwards as Edwards, his two brothers and one friend drove away from a party Saturday night, has been fired.
Jasmine Crockett, another Edwards family attorney, said Jordan and his two brothers were among the five people in the auto when the officer fired.
"The officers who extended this nightmare for those children ought to be properly reprimanded, as well", the family said.
Haber declined to say whether any shots were fired or whether the boys in the auto were armed, citing the ongoing investigation.
The officer fired three shots into the vehicle, Edwards family lawyer Lee Merritt told CNN, based on eyewitness accounts from the other boys in the auto.
Jordan's family pleaded with the public not to march or protest and to abstain from threatening the Balch Springs Police Department. But during the departmental investigation Chief Haber said video contradicted that information and that the auto was driving away from Officer Oliver when he fired his weapon.
Officer Roy Oliver was sacked three days after the Saturday night shooting. The activists said afterward that Johnson assured them she was studying the case closely.
Edwards' family was satisfied with the agent's dismissal, but said there was still "a long way to go" to achieve justice and asked for Oliver's arrest for murder.
Though the internal affairs inquiry has been completed, a criminal investigation into the shooting is proceeding by two Dallas County agencies, the sheriff's department and the district attorney's office, and charges are possible. The entire statement can be read below.
Both the Dallas County district attorney and the Dallas County sheriff's office are investigating the case.
"I just tried to speak to them from the heart about what I was feeling and to be very open and honest about my emotions", Fleener said.
The original statement was that officers were dispatched to a Balch Springs suburb in response to an 11 p.m. 911 call that reported a handful of inebriated teenagers walking around the neighborhood. After heading into the house to try to break up the party, the chief said Oliver heard gunshots outside. Instead of backing toward the officers, the chief said the vehicle had been in reverse but was moving forward when the officer fired. "While the investigation is still ongoing, we must face the fact that we have lost another young black male at the hands of a law enforcement official".
Based on what the video captured, Haber said previously that he questioned whether what he saw was "consistent with the policies and core values" of his department.
In 2014, a Chicago police officer shot and killed 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. The New York Times reported that that account changed after body camera footage was reviewed, proving that the auto was actually doing just the opposite.
Jordan was transported to Baylor University hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries, according to a BSPD press release. "They have more than sufficient probable cause to make an arrest". "We are declaring war on bad policing", he said.
Edwards, whose death was ruled a homicide, was riding in a vehicle with other teenagers, including his older brother.
