Pitch at Manny Machado's head sparked a heated exchange with Dustin Pedroia

Maybe not. In the end, though, Machado's intentions probably don't matter, his actions serving only to make the Red Sox-Orioles rivalry even hotter.

The Orioles have gotten a better combination of starting pitching and power so far this season.

ONE DAY LATER, Red Sox Manager John Farrell was still sore about Manny Machado's spikes-up slide that injured second baseman Dustin Pedroia. He came up again in the eighth and Barnes' pitch whizzed behind Machado and hit his bat.

Barnes denied he was trying to hit Machado, but everyone knows otherwise.

Youngster Dylan Bundy gets the ball tonight for Baltimore, he's 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA. Only one Chicago runner reached second base, and Kluber struck out nine, walked two and threw 110 pitches.

"You never want to get hit in the head". "That's kind of a line you don't cross. I'm not going to get into that". "I haven't seen a guy miss that bad in a while - behind a guy's head".

Red Sox: Farrell says because there's still some swelling in Pedroia's knee and ankle areas, he will "go through some imaging" Monday in Boston.

Cubs 12, Reds 8: Willson Contreras hit his first career grand slam and Anthony Rizzo and Jason Heyward added three-run shots. "Now, that's not me".

Now, somebody just needs to tell that to Barnes. He appeared to tell Machado that if he were behind the pitch to the head, it would have happened earlier in the game on Saturday. I just saw him go past the bag and Pedroia fall down. If you're going to protect guys, you do it right away. Both teams have out-scored opponents this season and each have played well the last week and a half.

"It's definitely a mishandled situation", Pedroia said. "I am trying to get the violence back into the pitch". After watching the video repeatedly, there's just no way to argue that the slide wasn't meant to deliberately take out his legs. He did hurt me. "I love playing against him. It's always me. Manny always does something wrong", Machado said. Yeah, I apologized to him. You know that. It's not me. I got three kids.

Just last week, Orioles manager Buck Showalter seemed to mock the Red Sox for the attention they received over a flu virus that ran through the clubhouse and ravaged the roster, causing several players to be quarantined. On Sunday, he allowed five earned runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings and is now 1-2 with a 7.50 ERA.

And then there were the bats.

Machado made it 2-0 in the fifth, launching a 2-1 pitch for his third home run. He was immediately followed by Hanley Ramirez's first home run of the season.

- Boston's three hottest hitters, Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, and Mitch Moreland all have crushed the O's in the past.

Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval exited Sunday's game against the Orioles with what is being reported as a "right knee sprain".
