Microsoft unveils Surface Laptop with price tag of $999

Microsoft has unveiled the latest product in its Surface line, the Surface Laptop, running Windows 10 S, a streamlined version of its popular operating system, as it tries to take share from Google's Chrome OS-run computers.

Microsoft unveiled a simpler and stripped-out version of Windows 10 at an event in NY yesterday.

Despite plunging sales of its Surface tablet computer, Microsoft double-downed on the brand by unveiling a new Surface Laptop - just hours after the first images of the new device leaked online. Now Chromebooks seem to influence the PC market too, and Microsoft replies with the event they are hosting in New York City.

The Surface Laptop is powerful than the Apple i7 MacBook Pro. Microsoft's devices chief Panos Panay said regarding student's computing requirements, "We talk to a lot of them. they're asking for a laptop, they're asking for a Surface laptop". That means you won't be able to install any third-party apps on your Windows 10 S desktop that do not have Windows Store versions.

We'll update this story with hands-on impressions and new photos of the Surface Laptop after we have a chance to see the new system close up.

"The Surface Laptop weighs in at just 2.76lbs and 14.47mm at its thickest point, and features a 13.5" Pixelsense touchscreen display with 3.4 million pixels and edge-to-edge Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and an Alcantara-covered keyboard.

Windows 10 S will have its own dedicated devices through partners such as Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Samsung, and Toshiba starting at $189 United States dollars. In addition, Microsoft announced that the operating system that runs on the new laptop will be Windows 10S, which is designed with the main focus on the students.

The company detailed the operating system at an education-focused event in NY.

In the end, the Surface Laptop and the Windows 10 S have to balance everything out in order to become a serious rival for the Chromebooks.

Despite being a slightly confusing name to the general consumer, Windows 10 S will be a much slimmer version of Windows where everything that runs on the OS can be downloaded from the Windows Store. These laptops will be available in the USA, and will be powered by the Windows 10 S system.

The Surface Laptop will be available in four colours - burgundy, graphite gold, platinum, and cobalt blue. There will be a number of different configurations of built-in RAM and on-board storage, ranging from a 124GB SSD to a whole terabyte SSD and 4GBs of 16GBs.
