Boyd was tagged with the loss on Wednesday despite giving up just three runs in 7 2/3 innings, the longest outing by a Detroit starter this season.
Jose Ramirez hit a two-run triple in the fourth, and the Indians rebounded a bit after losing the first two of the four-game set. Detroit has plated 14 runs in consecutive wins over Chicago and Cleveland.
The Tigers announced that 22,045 tickets were sold for Monday night's game between the Indians and Tigers at Comerica Park.
The Indians put Kluber on the 10-day DL with a lower back strain, meaning he will miss at least his next turn in the rotation. Kluber was removed from Tuesday night's start at Detroit after three innings because of back discomfort.
"I expect him to be fine", Ausmus said. Zimmermann has allowed five earned runs in three of his five starts this season.
Bauer is 0-2 with a 13.00 ERA (13 runs in nine innings) in two starts against the Tigers this year.
Perhaps the most notable storyline to emerge from this series is that Corey Kluber has been sent to the disabled list. "You have to balance trying to keep going against causing more damage".
Miguel Cabrera had one major complaint about his return from the disabled list. "I felt pretty good in the offseason".
Avila's single later in the inning drove in Justin Upton and gave the Tigers a four-run lead.
"Hopefully, it's sooner rather than later", Francona said. "We barely did anything offensively, but they gave us a chance to take a run at tying the game in the ninth".
To replace Kluber on the active roster, the Indians promoted right-hander Joe Colon from Triple-A Columbus.
"I mean, same mentality as today", Cabrera said. "He'll be back when he's back".
Braves 9, Mets 7 • Ender Inciarte drove in three runs with three hits, R.A. Dickey's floaters were more effective than Matt Harvey's fastballs for the second time in a week and host Atlanta beat NY. The pitch was inside, several inches off the plate. "He said it feels a lot better now".
"It's nice that we've played so far, but we've got a lot of games against them", Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said. He started four games against the Indians last season as a rookie and was 1-2 with a 6.98 ERA.
