Surface Laptop and Windows 10 S launch - who said what

Microsoft on Tuesday announced the launch of its Surface Laptop at its Education event in NY on Tuesday, with its software is created to take on Google Chromebooks and Apple's MacBooks in the education sector in the US.

Microsoft has decided that Edge will permanently be the default browser on Windows 10 S. This means that even if Google releases Chrome on the Store, Edge will still open by default every time you click on an HTML link. Without USB-C but equipped with a classic USB, a jack and an SD player, the Surface Laptop has a good data sheet.

While the Surface Laptop offers no game-changing concepts, it still offers something unique.

Essentially, the Surface Laptop is a Microsoft version of a Chromebook.

With Microsoft Windows 10 S, users can download apps directly from the Windows Store.

As the Creators Update continues to be installed on more devices, Microsoft is watching feedback from users to adjust future rollouts, said John Cable, director of program management for Windows servicing and delivery.

The Surface Laptop will become available in the market starting June 15. There's only one way to get anything other than platinum: order the $1,299 laptop with Intel Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. The operating system version is a lightweight edition of Windows 10 that will be limited to Windows Store.

And although they generally went down well, some of the tech press covering the event were quick to point out apparent contradictions between the positioning of the new education-focused OS - dubbed Windows 10 S - and the new laptop, which starts at $999. Microsoft's other portable Surface devices include the Surface Pro, which is a tablet, and the Surface Book, which is a 2-in-1. Despite that decision, the claimed battery life of more than 14 hours is something we all should get excited about.

Microsoft has reportedly announced a new version of Windows 10 operating system dubbed as Windows 10 S. Notably, Windows 10 S has been specially designed focusing on the education sector. The company will offer this and the new Office 365 for Education for free to schools that are approved by Microsoft. While Microsoft's own Surface Laptop is arguably more powerful and slick, it's such cheap options from hardware partners that will challenge Chromebooks to the core.

"Microsoft has been watching Google and Chrome very closely", said Ryan Reith of IDC, adding that he believes the campaign was years in development.
