The 21-year-old defensive end was seen as the top star in the Draft, and was picked by the Cleveland Browns.
The Cleveland Browns selected defensive end Myles Garrett with the first pick of the National Football League Draft in Philadelphia on Thursday before the Chicago Bears made a stunning call by trading up for quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
Unlike numerous top picks who were in Philadelphia walking the red carpet and hugging Commissioner Roger Goodell on a stage in front of 70,000 fans, Garrett was with family and friends in Texas when he received a phone call from the Browns.
The party at Tierra Verde Golf Club, which included a crawfish and crab boil and barbeque, honored the city's first No. 1 overall draft pick.
15 of the Texas A&M Aggies, waits near the bench in the second half of their game against the Tennessee Volunteers at Kyle Field on October 8, 2016, in College Station, Texas.
"I know he went to N.C. State, our rival school". The Browns then traded their No 12 pick to Houston and selected all-purpose defensive dynamo Jabrill Peppers of MI at No. 25, who fills hole at safety and on returns.
Cleveland, who have finished last in the AFC North nine years in a row, traded themselves into three selections in the first round. The 49ers ended the night pairing their second-round pick (No. 34) and No. 111 to jump back into the first round and select Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster 31st.
Cleveland dealt their number 12 overall pick to the Houston Texas, who used the spot to take Clemson University quarterback Deshaun Watson. Two more Crimson Tide players went in the next three picks: DE Jonathan Allen to Washington and tight end O.J. Howard to Tampa Bay.
T.J. Watt of Wisconsin, brother of three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt of Houston, was selected by Pittsburgh. "I've been watching him or a very long time just growing up".
"I knew there were teams inquiring about going up", he said. "Frankly, he is just a competitive kid that loves football, wants to be the best, wants to be the best at it, maybe the best ever".
Brown didn't rule out taking a quarterback in this draft, and said it's possible the team could bundle its many assets to trade for a veteran QB. The Bears not only exchanged first round picks with the 49ers, but they also sent San Francisco a 2017 third and fourth round pick along with a 2018 third round pick.
"We won't rest until we solidify the position", he said. "We set ourselves up next year for another good group to come in".
"Big things are coming", Garrett said.
Foster, widely considered a top-10 talent, fell out of favor after a spat with a physician at the combine and a diluted drug-test sample further clouded his draft standing.
