Sealy Jr. fled the scene and barricaded himself inside a nearby home in the Brick Mill Farm Development in Middletown, according to a Delaware State Police press release. McQueen detailed the events leading up to the officer's death, stating that the trooper observed a suspicious looking vehicle at a little after noon in the parking lot of the Wawa convenience store near Glasgow. At 4 a.m. Thursday, "officers once again came under fire from the suspect", police said.
Flags across the state are being flown at half staff in honor of Ballard. Ballard, wounded, sought shelter behind a parked auto, but Sealy chased after him and fired again, police said, including several shots that he fired "at close range" when the trooper was already on the ground. Authorities did not enter the home but continued attempts to make contact with Sealy to persuade him to surrender. "A heart that aches for law enforcement across our state", Carney said. In a press conference Thursday, state police said that they think Ballard "had a reason to stop" the red Dodge Charger and that it could have been "drug involvement".

Ballard, 32, died that afternoon at a hospital.
Hundreds of police officers remain at the scene of the shooting, with police vehicles parked haphazardly along the road. With no quick resolution, they blew the door of the house off its hinges shortly after 8 p.m. State police later stressed that he was released from custody and not considered a suspect. Flanked by Troopers on either side, McQueen detailed what transpired in the Wawa parking lot on Pulaski Highway in Bear yesterday afternoon.
Police say a suspect is holed up in a house about 15 miles south of the shooting scene and has fired on officers there.
