When dealing with mental illness, engaging in prevention, early identification and early intervention are as effective in treating the condition as they are in treating the burden of other chronic conditions.
Lack of information and misunderstanding; faith, spirituality and community ("pray it away"); reluctance and inability to access mental health services; medications; and provider biases and inequality of care are just some of the main reasons why blacks tend to stray away from professional help. However, mental health conditions are medical illnesses, just like diabetes or leukemia, and not a personality type.
Some will deck their halls in green, symbolizing the new growth and beginnings that education, hope and treatment offer people with mental illness.
