Instead, the attack that killed one woman and injured six other partygoers seemed to be driven by a recent split-up with the woman he called after he shot his first two victims. Two victims are in critical condition but all are expected to survive, Zimmerman said Monday. Police officers shot and killed the gunman, authorities said.
When officers arrived, Selis fired in the direction of one of them, prompting three of the personnel to return fire, according to the SDPD. When asked if detectives were investigating the shooting as a potential hate crime, Zimmerman said they were exploring all possible motives.
Police said seven people were struck by gunfire: four African-American women, two African-American men and one Hispanic man. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and "like a war zone", in local and national news reports, noting that many people who were out by the pool fled the scene as the shooting began, and that one man broke his arm while jumping a fence to flee. 10News spoke with many residents Monday, still in utter disbelief after their neighbor, Pete Selis, opened fire at the pool Sunday evening.
The pilot reported seeing multiple victims down and directed officers to Selis, who he said appeared to be reloading his weapon.
Later, he added: "I would like @SanDiegoPD to explain how a white killer can go to a predominantly white area of San Diego, shoot 7 Blks, and it's NOT racial?"
Peter Selis, 49, opened fire Sunday during a party held at a San Diego-area apartment complex's swimming pool.
Gabrielle Sulli, who lives at the apartment complex, told KGTV she heard "people screaming" and said "there is a insane guy that is shooting, we chose to run ... we literally saw people jumping out from the fences and running away like insane". "Even when he reloaded his magazine, he sat in his chair", said Demetrius Griffin. "It is apparent that he wanted his girlfriend to listen in as he carried out his rampage".
"The helicopter was able to direct the ground units, as to exactly where the suspect was in the pool area", Zimmerman said.
The identities of the victims have not been released, but police confirmed that six were black and one was latino.
"We don't know if he knew any of the victims", Zimmerman said.
During a news conference, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said, "This is truly a horrific act of violence that took place here today".
Eight victims were transported to area hospitals Sunday with various injuries.
At one point the guest of honor invited the man to join the party.
But Griffin disputed that and said there was "no beer involved".
Investigators have not found any writings or evidence from internet searches that Selis had planned the shootings, Ahearn said. A mechanic at a auto dealership, court records show he filed for bankruptcy in 2015 and owed tens of thousands of dollars to medical groups, credit card companies and tax collectors.
Paramedics respond to the scene of a mass shooting at an apartment pool party on Sun., April 30, 2017.
"It was a awful experience that we went through, but I'm glad that I'm all right, and I'm glad that most of my friends are all right", he said.
