Packers choose cornerback Kevin King as first pick in the NFL Draft

Though they had to wait a while for their names to be called during the 2017 NFL Draft, former BYU running back Jamaal Williams and former Utah offensive lineman Isaac Asiata made the list of NFL newcomers who could make an immediate impact. He is the second-straight offensive player taken by Green Bay. Minus retired cornerback Sam Shields, who played only a handful of plays all season, the secondary wasn't fast enough, big enough, tough enough, deep enough or good enough to compete with elite National Football League offenses. Barrington stuck around for three seasons with the Packers, starting seven games in 2014.

GREEN BAY-Presented with trade overtures for the second time in less than 24 hours, the Green Bay Packers in the end made sure that Kevin King would not escape their clutches.

Tackle Oniel Cousins was selected by the Baltimore Ravens (third round, 36th pick, 99th overall), free safety Quintin Demps was chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles (fourth round, 18th pick, 117th overall) and running back Marcus Thomas was picked by the Dallas Cowboys (fifth round, 31st pick, 166th overall).

"It's insane I've been watching Ha Ha (Clinton-Dix) a lot". That's not to say that Kevin King may not make the roster, but beyond the fifth round, nothing is guaranteed. "So I'm just excited to get to work as soon as possible... Anything I can do to help is what I'm here to do". Shaheen had 16 touchdowns, a Division II record for tight ends, in 2016 and is an impressive physical specimen at 6-foot-6, 278 pounds, earning the nickname "Baby Gronk", an homage to Patriots All-Pro Rob Gronkowski.

"I think it's very good strategy wise", Thompson said Thursday about moving into a coveted position at the outset of Round 2 this year.

The Packers are banking on it.

After that trade with Cleveland, Green Bay was sitting with the first pick in Friday's second round.

In the second round, the Packers used the 61st pick on safety Josh Jones of North Carolina State, another rangy player with tremendous speed.

Earlier this month, Atlanta's Desmond Trufant signed a five-year contract extension worth $69 million, making him one of the NFL's highest-paid cornerbacks. King and House will join third-year holdovers Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter at cornerback. Minnesota previously signed Latavius Murray in free agency to offset Peterson's loss.

So was Jones' final season at UTEP.

King is 6-foot-3 and runs a 4.43 40-yard dash; Jones is 6-foot-1 and runs a 4.41. He's also a powerful hitter who can play near the line of scrimmage. While it was a familiar tune for Packers' fans who have watched their defensively challenged team underachieve every season since winning Super Bowl XLV, at least Thompson went bigger and faster than ever before.

"If you looked at old pictures of me growing up, it was all green and gold. Everybody's fast, everybody's explosive, and I think that's what we're trying to get at".

But the rest of the Packers' roster was inconsistent with the stat Highsmith saw on the draft-room TV.

"We tried to add some more pieces to the pie", Thompson said.

"He's a guy we really liked, and would have considered", he said. "It's nice to add that to the equation".

King was the sixth cornerback selected. Jones is versatile enough that he can play anywhere from nickel back to linebacker. For starters, the Packers drafted 10 players in a 7 round draft.

Denver began Round 5 by taking MI tight end Jake Butt, a potential first-rounder until he tore up his knee in the Orange Bowl. "Need? I don't know if I'd use that word. There's high expectations for those two guys, no doubt about it".
