India Bollywood actor Vinod Khanna dies of cancer at age 70

He featured in some of the biggest Bollywood hits like "Mere Apne", "Insaaf", "Parvarish", "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar", "Qurbani", "Dayavaan", "Mera Gaon Mera Desh", "Chandni", "The Burning Train" and "Amar Akbar Anthony".

Last month, he was hospitalized in Mumbai due to severe dehydration and bladder cancer, according to a report in the Hindustan Times.

Khanna is survived by his wife, Kavita; acting sons Rahul and Akshaye, as well as another son and daughter.

The actor had made his debut in 1968 film 'Mann Ka Meet', playing the villain opposite Sunil Dutt.

For nearly five decades, Vinod Khanna ruled the Hindi film world with his lush sideburns and dimpled chin, despite an active career in politics that began in 1997.

Mumbai: In the early 80s, his fans were shocked when debonair Vinod Khanna announced that he was quitting Bollywood and following his spiritual Guru Osho Rajnish.

Later, in the year 1997, the actor joined politics and became the BJP MP of Gurdaspur.

This is how former India captain and present head coach Anil Kumble condoled Vinod Khanna's death.

"We have lost an eminent personality who played a variety of roles in his film career and later in his social-political life".

Actor Rishi Kapoor, the co-star of 1977's Amar Akbar Anthony, posted a picture of the film and tweeted, "We will miss you, Amar".

The film fraternity are sending messages of condolences to the actor's family and expressing the loss to the film industry.

However, Khanna's sons said that their father was stable and recovering.

The sitting MP had won the seat four times.

He was appointed the Minister of State for Culture and Tourism and later the Minister of State for External Affairs in the government of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Before marrying Kavita, Vinod Khanna was married to Geetanjali but they later got divorced.

The Veteran singer Asha Bhosle remembered Khanna and said he is the decent man and a star till the very end. After doing some more films he became the "original heartthrob" of Bollywood films.

Vinod was an active politician, in addition, he was 2 filmfare awards holder.
