For the Boston Bruins, the 2016-17 season came to a close when Ottawa's Clarke MacArthur sent the Senators onto the Second Round with a powerplay goal in overtime of Game 6 of the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Playoffs First Round Series between the Senators and Bruins.
As a result of the two injuries to top-four defenceman, McAvoy was pressed into early National Hockey League action rather than gaining valuable experience in a potential lengthy playoff run with Providence.
He then went on to play for coach Bob Huggins at West Virginia University, helping lead the Mountaineers to the 2010 Final Four. Senators D Mark Borowiecki missed the last four games of the Bruins series with a lower-body injury and is questionable for Game 1.
Boston forced a Game 6 by picking up a 3-2 2OT win at Ottawa.
Maybe it was coaching, maybe it was nerves and inexperience, or maybe it was a mixture, but the Bruins made far too many mistakes in this series. Every game was decided by one goal.
Boston fell to Ottawa in six games. The Senators won two of three regular-season meetings against the Rangers this year. The Senators, who hadn't won a postseason series since 2013, will play the New York Rangers in the second round. This (loss to Ottawa) certainly stings, I think there is a lot of unfinished business here.
"Everybody should be proud of themselves", goalie Tuukka Rask said.
Rask said he was proud of the resolve the Bruins displayed after longtime coach Claude Julien was sacked on February 7 and replaced by interim Bruce Cassidy.
He played the entire 2009-10 season despite being unable to shoot free throws right-handed, and having, as his coach Bob Huggins put it to the New York Times, "no chance to shoot a jump shot". Guys are working hard and it's a huge letdown after that game for us. He's still blocking shots, then we come in today, what he did today. "They get a bounce and we've got to find a way to regroup". "It's just kind of the way the game went".
Bruins management must now decide whether or not to remove Cassidy's interim tag.
Boston kept pouring on the pressure after Bergeron's goal, but Ottawa's stalwart defence kept things level - which meant that, just like in Game 5, the two teams were going to sort things out in overtime. After a scoreless third and first OT session, Kuraly ended the game in the second overtime with his second goal.
Matthews joined Wendel Clark as the second teenager ever to score a goal in four straight playoff games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He beat Rask up top at 8:32 of the second to give the club a 2-1 lead. Anderson gave up a big rebound and all Bergeron had to do was deposit it home to bring some life back into the Garden. There is also a buzz about the youth movement, with eight skaters suiting up for their first playoff action.
Karlsson led the Senators to a first-round victory while averaging 30 minutes per game in the playoffs, including 41:51 of ice time in a double-overtime loss to the Bruins in Game 5. Only two of the games were finished in regulation, one of them was a 2-1 decision, the other a tightly-fought 1-0 shutout for Ottawa's Craig Anderson. Showed mettle in the face of half his defense wiped out by injury and center David Krejci going back out of the lineup Sunday after a Game 5 knee-to-knee hit with Chris Wideman.
"We can't be, really, standing here and kind of feeling sorry for ourselves because we lost so many guys, but, you know, that's part of playoffs", Chara said.
