Purdue Sworn in as Ag Secretary

"Sonny Perdue is the kind of leader the pork industry, and the entire livestock industry, needs at the US Department of Agriculture", said NPPC President Ken Maschhoff, a pork producer from Carlyle, Illinois. Fellow Georgian and supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas did the honors. "I am proud to have been given this opportunity and look forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work as we continue to move the USDA and our nation forward".

Perdue, a 70-year-old former two-term governor of the state of Georgia who grew up on a dairy farm, earned substantial bipartisan support and was confirmed by a vote of 87 to 11. He also announced the launch of his official Twitter handle: @SecretarySonny.

"Our farmers deserve a government that serves their interests and empowers them to do the hard work that they love to do so much", Trump said.

Later in the day, Perdue joined President Donald Trump for a "Farmers Roundtable" at the White House to address issues facing the American agriculture community, as the president signed an Executive Order establishing an Interagency Task Force on Agriculture and Rural Prosperity. Specifically, according the to the White House, “The task force is ordered to identify legislative, regulatory, or policy changes to promote American agriculture, economic development, job growth, infrastructure improvements, technological innovation, energy security, and quality of life in rural America.” The task force is set to convene within the coming weeks.

"Our dairy farmers face many challenges, and they can't afford to have Canada, one the largest untapped markets for US dairy products, continue to block access for USA products", said Rep.

NY dairy and vegetable farmer, Maureen Torrey from Genesee County, joined 13 other farmers from across the country for a roundtable discussion yesterday with President Donald Trump and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue.
