Pence embraces U.S.-Australia partnership after Trump spat

Way back in February of 2017, which feels like it was 30 years ago at this point, Donald Trump screwed up the simple act of calling Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
"The historic United States-Australia alliance is more vital than ever to regional security and prosperity".
"Let me make it clear: the United States intends to honor the agreement, subject to the results of the vetting processes that now apply to all refugees considered for admission to the United States of America", Pence said.
As tension with North Korea continues, he used the occasion to announce that a U.S. naval strike group would arrive in the Sea of Japan in days.
Vice-president Mike Pence has said the agreement to resettle up to 1,250 asylum seekers, which was made by the Obama administration, is being fulfilled "out of respect to the extremely important alliance" between the United States and Australia.

Pence's office said he would depart Hawaii on Monday afternoon after meeting with U.S. Pacific Command leaders and troops stationed in Honolulu. The deal struck by former president Barack Obama was publically labelled a "dumb" agreement by President Donald Trump.
A day earlier, Pence told Australian leaders that the US would honor an Obama-era refugee agreement between the two countries. Australia is the only country to have fought alongside the U.S.in every major conflict since World War I.
US VP Mike Pence will tour Sydney after a day of talks confirming strong ties between America and Australia.
Pence is on the last part of his four-country trip to Asia and Australia.
A senior administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the relationship, said Trump and Pence "are constantly talking about what message they want to be conveyed".
Reports stated that Donald Trump confronted Turnbull over a deal between the US and Australia which was created during the Obama presidency.
"President Trump has made it clear that we will honor the agreement", Pence continued.
The alliance was front-and-center for Pence in his meetings with top Australian officials, who repeatedly noted their military partnership for almost a century.
U.S. Vice President Mike Pence says the U.S.is quietly confident that China will do more to influence North Korea to drop its nuclear weapons program.
He later said their conversation was "the worst call by far" of any he'd done with foreign leaders and took to Twitter to call the agreement a "dumb deal".
Trump plans to outline principles for tax reform onWednesday, a top brief for Pence.
Pence sought to put any sense of lingering tension to rest during his visit, which included meetings with Turnbull and other government officials at Admiralty House, an official residence with spectacular views of the Sydney Opera House.
