North Korea Detains Another U.S. Citizen

Trump said that he was disappointed with the lack of response and hopes to solve these real world problems.

President Donald Trump, meanwhile, had a phone call with his Chinese counterpart, who called for a cooling of tensions.

With North Korea posing a threat through missile test launches and a recent military parade, their neighbor to the north might be the United States' best bet to keeping North Korea under control.

While it has not fired missiles against other countries, it has vowed strong action - including missile attacks against South Korea - if it is invaded by the South and the US.

The United Nations Security Council must be prepared to impose new sanctions on North Korea amid escalating tensions over its missile and nuclear programs, United States President Donald Trump said on Monday ahead of a lunch with ambassadors from countries on the UN council.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the briefing to senators will be delivered by four top administration officials: Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford.

North Korea has so far conducted five confirmed nuclear tests and numerous missile test-launches.

China is North Korea's sole major ally but it has been angered by its nuclear and missile programmes and is frustrated by its belligerence.

The Pentagon said its leaders and other top officials will give a classified briefing on North Korea to U.S. senators on Wednesday at the White House, rather than in the usual secure rooms at the Capitol.

The US has been unnerved by North Korea's advancing missile and nuclear programs and has dispatched a military strike group to the Korean Peninsula.

USA ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Washington and the global community were maintaining pressure on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un but "not trying to pick a fight with him".

The United States has ordered an aircraft carrier strike group to the western Pacific near North Korea.

Twenty-nine Chinese steel companies' licenses have been revoked as Beijing keeps up its campaign to tackle overcapacity in the sector and days after Trump said he would open a probe into cheap exports of the metal from China and elsewhere. Pressed by Guthrie as to what that reason would be, Haley said, "If you see him attack a military base, if you see him if you see some sort of intercontinental ballistic missile, then obviously we're going to do that. And China's helping really put that pressure on him".

Trump also spoke by telephone with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

"We agreed to strongly demand that North Korea, which is repeating its provocation, show restraint", Abe told reporters.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported that the North appeared to have deployed a large number of long-range artillery units in the region of Wonsan on its east coast on Tuesday, conducting a large-scale live firing drill.

Envoys on the North Korean nuclear issue from the United States, South Korea and Japan are due to meet in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Adding to the tension, North Korea detained a USA citizen on Saturday as he attempted to leave the country.
