Shaw was hit hard by Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi behind the NY net about seven minutes into overtime in Game 5 on Thursday.
The Habs held a 2-1 series lead before dropping back-to-back games. Derek Stepan sealed the deal with the empty-net goal and the Rangers will now enjoy some deserved days off after a physical series. Jesper Fast evened the score at 1-1 for the Rangers in the first and Brady Skjei evened things up 2-2 in the second period.
The Canadiens dropped the best-of-seven series 4-2. "We came back a lot this year, we've shown that, and we've got an opportunity to show that in this series". "It was a nice way to end this game but we've got a job to do with our home game here and try to end the series". It will be either the Ottawa Senators or the Boston Bruins.
One of the big issues for Montreal has been the lack of production from leading regular-season goal scorer Max Pacioretty. The Canadiens won the Atlantic with 103 points while the Rangers earned the second wild-card spot with 102 points. In 2014, it was in the conference finals.
Coach Claude Julien said he hopes that same resilience carries over to the elimination game. "I think I'm at my best when I'm engaged into the game".
"We needed more", said Julien, who added the Canadiens "had offence".
After being outplayed for most of the first period, the Rangers came out more aggressive in the second and outshot the Canadiens 12-8. "We had more jump". They made it hard for us but we have a tough team in here.
The goal was the second of the series for Zuccarello, and New York's first on 15 power plays over the course of the six games.
"It's lucky", Zuccarello said. Carey Price made 20 saves. "They're always on that line but you have to make sure you don't cross it because you can't give up power plays".
It fired up the Madison Square Garden crowd that was raucous during the national anthems but had been silenced by the Rangers slow start in the first period.
The Canadiens entered 2016-17 with a healthy Price, and added Shea Weber and Radulov in the off-season. The UNDER is 17-3-4 in New York's last 24 playoff games at home.
With his team facing elimination, captain Max Pacioretty says it is the ideal time for the Montreal Canadiens to show what they're made of.
Lundqvist stopped 195 of 206 shots in the series - good for a.947 save percentage. We didn't like the way we played in the first. I don't think our group thought that we were good enough to match that intensity.
"We thought we could have gone further". His contribution to Game 6 was a cross-check to the face of Rangers rookie Jimmy Vesey, followed by an unlikely fight between the two skill players. None of the teams' 16 playoff series has reached a Game 7.
Through the first five games, this has been one of the most exciting and evenly matched series of the 2016-17 National Hockey League playoffs. Kevin Hayes, J.T. Miller, Mika Zibanejad, Dan Girardi, and Ryan McDonagh each registered an assist.
